Virtual Power Plants
What is a Virtual Power Plant & How Does it Work?
A Virtual Power Plant (VPP) is an innovative network that connects various small-scale, decentralized power generating units, flexible power consumers, and storage systems. These units, known as Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), include solar panels, wind turbines, battery storage systems, and even electric vehicles. By integrating these resources through advanced technologies, a VPP can manage and optimize the generation and consumption of electricity, acting as a single large power plant.
A VPP operates by aggregating the capacity of various DERs and managing them as a unified entity through a central control system. It manages resources such as Sol-Ark® residential hybrid inverters and commercial hybrid inverters to optimize energy use. For instance, a VPP can shift energy consumption to off-peak hours or utilize stored energy during high-demand periods to enhance operational efficiency, lower energy cost, and reduce strain on the grid.
Advantages of Using a Virtual Power Plant
- Grid Stability: VPPs enhance the stability of the power grid by balancing supply and demand in real-time.
- Cost Savings: By optimizing energy use and reducing peak demand, VPPs help lower electricity bills for both residential and commercial users.
- Energy Resilience: VPPs improve energy resilience by utilizing local energy resources, which can be crucial during grid outages or emergencies.
- Demand Response: VPPs can adjust energy consumption during peak times, participating in demand response programs to stabilize the grid and earn financial incentives.
- Consumer Empowerment: VPPs empower consumers by providing them with more control over their energy usage and the opportunity to participate in energy markets.
- Scalability: VPPs can easily scale by adding more DERs, making them adaptable to various sizes and types of energy networks.
Sol-Ark® VPP Solutions
MySol-Ark VPP Features & Functionality
MySol-Ark is an advanced, robust platform purpose-built data monitoring solution for solar installers, homeowners, and commercial business owners. MySol-Ark’s software connects the utility company to your solar hybrid inverter to participate in demand response events.
- Easily sign up a battery and inverter system through MySol-Ark
- Once enrolled, receive notifications of upcoming demand response program events
- If you opt-in to demand program events, MySol-Ark will automatically charge or discharge your battery to the grid at the scheduled event time
Sol-Ark® VPP Programs
Sol-Ark works with ConnectionSolutions and Connecticut ESS, so you can earn incentives to tap into your battery’s stored energy at times of high electricity demand. Earn additional revenue based on your battery system’s average kilowatt (kW) discharge over the course of all of the season’s peak demand events based on each program’s rate. Enrolling in our partner VPP programs is a simple way to help your community by letting utilities more effectively manage energy on the grid.
