Protection Against Solar Flares & Geomagnetic Storms

Solar flares are intense bursts of radiation from the sun’s surface, caused by the release of magnetic energy stored in the solar atmosphere. These phenomena can have destructive effects similar to Electromagnetic Pulses (EMPs) but occur naturally. When solar flares are directed towards Earth, they can cause geomagnetic storms, which are disturbances in Earth’s magnetosphere. These storms are triggered by the solar wind, a stream of charged particles emitted by the sun, interacting with Earth’s magnetic field. The probability of experiencing a significant geomagnetic event is approximately 1% per year. The NASA report from July 2014 states there is approximately a 12% chance of a significant solar flare occurring over the next 10 years. Historical evidence supports the severity of such events.
